Eve Appeal trekathon: charity raise over £40,000 for female gynaecological cancers

The Eve Appeal is a registered charity aiming to help patients with female gynaecological cancers such as cervical, vaginal, womb and ovarian cancers. They have worked tirelessly since they first formed in 2005 to raise money to fund a world-class research programme at the Department of Women’s Cancer, based at the University College London (UCL).

The Department’s vital and much-needed research will benefit women in the UK and worldwide suffering from the various types of female cancers.

A report by an independent panel, reviewing the Department’s work and progress, acknowledges the importance of The Eve Appeal’s role in helping to fight cancers such as uterine cancer, which affects 5% of female cancer patients in the UK:

“The Eve Appeal has consistently contributed about 15% of the total research income. However, its contributions have been disproportionately important because they have pump-primed new projects, supported highly innovative work and covered gaps in funding allowing projects to maintain momentum. The national and international standing of the projects to which it has contributed is testament to the effectiveness of The Eve Appeal support.”

On the 10th of May, 130 of Eve Appeal fundraisers took part in a one-day trekking challenge across a 26-mile stretch of Hadrian’s Wall.

Trekking in an easterly direction, hundreds of trekkers followed the Hadrian’s Wall National Trail and encompassed some fascinating sections and sights of the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site. Famous sights and scenery included the ruins of the Birdoswall Roman Fort, the charming village of Gilsland, Thirlwall Castle, Housesteads Roman Fort and Verovicium Roman Fort, to name just a few.

The total amount raised was over a staggering £40,000 and all 130 trekkers reached the finish, despite the horrendous (and typically temperamental) British weather, ensuring that thousands of women suffering from female gynaecological cancers will be receiving treatment as a result of the research which is funded by The Eve Appeal.
